How Much Does It Cost to Self-Publish a Book in 2026?
Most self-published books that look professional cost somewhere between about $600 and $3,000 to produce. Where your book lands in that range depends mostly on one thing: how much editing it needs.
Below is what each part costs, what you can skip, and what you shouldn't.
The short answer
| Service | What it covers | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Editing | Developmental, line or copy editing | $500 to $2,500+, by word count and depth |
| Proofreading | A final check for typos | $250 to $600 |
| Cover design | Ebook cover, or full print wrap | $200 to $800 |
| Formatting | EPUB ebook and print-ready PDF | $150 to $500 |
| ISBNs | Optional, for your own imprint | $0 to $295 |
| Uploading to stores | Amazon KDP, IngramSpark and others | $0 |
| Marketing | Ads, launch content, outreach | Whatever you choose to spend |
These are typical ranges for professional freelancers and small agencies in the US. You'll find cheaper offers, and much pricier ones.
Editing: the biggest cost, and the biggest difference
Editing is priced by word count, so a 90,000-word fantasy novel costs more to edit than a 30,000-word memoir. There are three main levels:
- Developmental editing looks at the big picture: structure, plot, pacing and character. It matters most for first drafts.
- Line editing works sentence by sentence on flow, word choice and repetition.
- Copyediting fixes grammar, spelling, punctuation and consistency.
Not every book needs all three. A manuscript that has been through beta readers and careful self-editing may only need a copyedit and proofread. The cheapest way to find out is to have an editor look at a sample chapter first.
Cover design: don't skip it
Readers judge books by their covers, usually from a thumbnail on a phone screen. A cover that doesn't match its genre's look tells readers it's not for them, however good the writing is. An ebook cover alone costs less than a full print wrap, which needs a spine and back cover sized to your page count.
Formatting
Formatting turns your manuscript into an EPUB file for ebooks and a print-ready PDF for paperbacks and hardcovers. Simple novels cost less to format than nonfiction with images, tables and charts. Amazon no longer accepts MOBI files for new Kindle ebooks, so EPUB is the format to ask for.
Uploading is free
Publishing on Amazon KDP costs nothing upfront; Amazon takes its share from each sale. IngramSpark, which gets print books into bookstores and libraries, also offers free title setup. Since February 1, 2026, it no longer charges revision fees, but it applies a 1.875% market access fee to books enabled for distribution (IngramSpark).
Costs first-time authors forget
- ISBNs. Amazon gives a free ISBN for paperbacks, and Kindle ebooks don't need one. If you want your own imprint on every edition, Bowker sells one ISBN for $125 or ten for $295 (Bowker). A free Amazon ISBN can only be used on Amazon.
- Proof copies. Order a printed proof before release. You pay the printing cost plus shipping.
- Author copies for events and giveaways, also at printing cost.
- Advertising. Many authors start Amazon Ads at $5 to $15 a day and adjust from there.
How to spend less without cutting corners
- Spend on editing and the cover first. Those two decide whether readers keep going.
- Do your own revision passes and use beta readers before paying for editing, so you pay for a lighter edit.
- Start with ebook and paperback. Add hardcover and audiobook once the book is selling.
- Get a fixed written quote. Avoid anyone who won't show prices until you're on a sales call.
