How Amazon royalties work
Ebooks
On Amazon.com you pick a royalty plan for each ebook. The 70% plan pays 70% of the list price minus a delivery fee of $0.15 per MB, for ebooks priced $2.99 to $12.99. Amazon raised the top of that range from $9.99 on July 7, 2026. Outside the range, or if you choose it, you earn 35% with no delivery fee. A 70% ebook must also be priced at least 20% below its print edition.
Paperbacks
Amazon pays 60% of the list price on paperbacks priced $9.99 or more, or 50% below that, and subtracts the printing cost. Black-and-white books up to 110 pages cost $2.30 to print at regular trim sizes; above that it's $1.00 plus $0.012 a page. Color costs more, and larger trims cost more per page.
Hardcovers
Hardcovers follow the same 60% or 50% split. Printing starts at $5.65 plus $0.012 a page for black and white, so most hardcovers need a list price above $15. They can't use Expanded Distribution.

Questions about royalties
How much does Amazon pay per ebook sale?
On Amazon.com you choose 35% or 70%. The 70% plan applies to ebooks priced $2.99 to $12.99 (the range was widened from $9.99 in July 2026), minus a delivery fee of $0.15 per MB. Outside that range you earn 35% of the list price.
How are paperback royalties calculated?
Amazon pays 60% of the list price on books priced $9.99 or more, or 50% below $9.99, then subtracts the printing cost. Printing cost depends on page count, ink and trim size. A 300-page black-and-white 6 x 9 paperback costs $4.60 to print.
What's the lowest price I can set for a paperback?
KDP won't let you price below the point where your royalty would be zero. This calculator shows that minimum for your page count and ink.
What is Expanded Distribution?
An optional setting that makes your paperback available to bookstores and libraries through other distributors. It pays 40% of the list price minus printing, so it needs a higher minimum price. Hardcovers can't use it.
Does this include Kindle Unlimited page reads?
No. Kindle Unlimited pays from a monthly fund per page read, and the rate changes every month, so it can't be calculated in advance.
Are these numbers exact?
They follow the rules on Amazon KDP's help pages for Amazon.com, checked in October 2026, before taxes and currency conversion. Amazon can change its rules, so check KDP's royalty pages before you publish.
